Ana Soler wins the VI Artist Book Award

The Ankaria foundation has distinguished the artist Ana Soler (Seville, 1972) with the VI The Painted Word prize for Best Artist Book, recognition for her project, “El futuro del pasado. Historia de una historia de maltrato silente. La mujer instinta”.

It regards a piece conceived integrally in an artist book format, where different graphic elements are combined, such as drawings, photographies, engravings or lithographs accompanied with texts from Doctor Clarisa Pinkola. This ones, corresponding to her book “Mujeres que corren con los lobos” (Barcelona, 2001).

Throughout the 249 pages of this unique piece, the reader/spectator is offered a series of images, symbols and metaphors evoked from different stages of the abuse and psychological death process a woman goes through. At the same time, some light is shone on a possible healing.

“The piece graphically describes sensations and situations, contributing certain codes to uncover possible wounds and their causes, and in this way abandon the living-dead state an abused woman finds herself in.” the artist assures herself.

Ana Soler is a doctor for the University of Seville and a teacher and investigator for the University of Vigo. Coming from the world of graphic design and specialized in contemporary multiple work, she develops her professional activity in the world of contemporary art, carrying out complex tridimensional installations that take over the exhibition space. It has been said about her that “she draws in the air”, creating complete pieces where the spectator becomes the protagonist.

The second prices has distinguished Stefan Klein (Memmingen, Germany,1983) for his project “Uber Das Neue” (Speech on the new”), a book printed on thermal paper, whose texts disappear after certain time, leaving empty pages, free to form a new declaration.

Th especial prize, Javier Roson Perez, for the young artist under 28 years old has been awarded to Jorge Isla (Huesca,1992) for his book “El Libro de los Plagios”

The project with which Jorge Isla concurred for the prize and for which he has been awarded, is an intervention on “El libro de los plagios”. It regards an edition from the editorial Pamiela developed by Jorge Oteiza. This copy was discovered by the author through a small auction taking place at Zaragoza`s Ancient Book Fair during June of 2018. When he opened it, he found out the copy had been intervened and dedicated by Jorge Oteiza himself to the writer Jorge de Semprun Maura. Through the appropriation of the book, the written texts of the Basque artist himself are put into value and are endowed with the artistic character they lack in their primal form.
